Workiing in dementia care at the St Monica Trust

Work with people who live with dementia

The St Monica Trust currently employs more than 100 people in the provision of care and support and other services for people living with dementia, including support workers, registered nurses, occupational and speech therapists, activity co-ordinators, porters, housekeeping and catering staff. They are part of a team of more than 750 employees and volunteers who today help deliver the many different care and accommodation services provided by The Trust in Bristol, North Somerset and surrounding counties.

In the provision of its specialist dementia care service, the Trust has introduced a new working environment and new working practices. Traditional routines and work schedules, like early morning cleaning rotas, have been binned. Meals are a social event, involving all staff as well as residents.  At the Russets, residents who wake up at night are reassured by staff also dressed in their dressing gowns and slippers.

Most importantly, support staff are being appointed to be part of one, small family team, assigned to just one bungalow, working closely with residents in a way that promotes diversity, individual identity and residents’ rights of citizenship. They are recruited for their ability to work in a creative and flexible way, as well as for their commitment to give residents the space and choice to live their lives as freely and fully as possible, much as they did in their own homes.

The Trust has developed its own nationally accredited training specifically designed for staff caring for and working with people living with dementia. This is taught right across its 800 strong workforce to promote understanding at all possible levels of how best to support and communicate with people living with dementia.
